Role:

CN is seeking a qualified and detail oriented person with railroad bridge experience to conduct visual arm's length and cursory bridge inspections throughout the Southern Region.

The candidate must be able to accommodate changing work schedules throughout the year depending on the type of bridge inspections being conducted.

Responsible for identifying structural distress, condition ranking of bridge components and maintenance of the bridge inspection database.

This position is based out of Wisconsin and includes territory primarily in both Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois; accordingly, preference will be given to local candidates and relocation will not be provided.


Critical performance areas include the following:

  • Maintain and operate a CN high-rail pick-up truck; occasionally operate a CN snooper truck.
  • Inspection of steel, concrete and timber bridges, including culverts.
  • Prepare condition assessment reports for bridges and other structures for the purposes of repair.
  • Ensure that bridges and other railway structures are inspected in accordance with FRA Part 237 regulations and approved railway standards.
  • Apply CN policies and the 5 guiding principles.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily outdoors in varying types of weather throughout US subdivisions.
  • Working at heights; will require limited climbing.
  • Significant travel requirements (up to 40%-60% of the time), including overnight stays away from home.
  • May be required to respond to emergency situations on any day of the year.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Bridge Foreman, or proven maintenance experience with bridges and associated components.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid CDL license with air brake endorsement, or ability to obtain within one-year.
  • Ability to visually identify defects in structural steel, concrete and timber super and substructures.
  • CN USOR and OTS certified.
  • Good computer skills; working knowledge of MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, and ability to learn data entry into EPI and BCS bridge inspection databases.
  • Must be disciplined and self-motivated to succeed.


The ideal candidate profile:

  • 5+years experience as a Railroad Bridge Inspector, or proven railroad bridges and associated components.
  • Construction Technology, Associates and/or Bachelors degree.
  • Experienced in EPI, BCS and SAP.
